After a traumatic hip injury, Jeremy* had a very limited range of motion in his hips. He was a golfer on the Nationwide Tour and was getting ready for Qualifying School but his tight hip flexors were literally throwing him off his game. In order to rotate fully into his back swing he had to lift his left foot off the ground, leaving his balance unstable. His hip rotation measured at 20 degrees and his golf pro was concerned about his ability to perform at professional levels.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) increases
range of motion in injured athletes.

That’s when Jeremy’s golf pro introduced him to Stacey Vornbrock, an EFT practitioner specializing in sports performance. Initially Stacey did EFT with Jeremy for just a few minutes and his hip rotation increased from 20 to 40 degrees.

The next day, the golf pro was stretching Jeremy on the table and he was still getting 40 degrees rotation. They wanted another 5 degrees, so Stacey did EFT with Jeremy again, but this time, she focused on the trauma associated with the initial hip injury. To everybody’s surprise, Jeremy had an additional 10 degrees of motion … an overall increase of 30 degrees with just minutes of EFT.

EFT is based on new discoveries using the body’s energy meridians for emotional and physical healing. This simple-to-use system involves stimulating these meridians by tapping on them with your fingertips. Thus it can be used anywhere, anytime. You might be wondering how it’s possible to get these kind of results where conventional physical therapies fail. Here’s the difference … unlike physical therapy, EFT works at the level of the subtle energy system of your body. According to Stacey, the key to success with releasing athletic injuries is to target the trauma to the body, as well as the emotional trauma associated with the injury.

Another phenomenon that Stacey targets with EFT is the body’s “memory of protection” where the cells retain a memory of the injury to keep the area safe. Unfortunately, this memory of protection often lingers after the injury has healed, causing the cells to act as if the body is still injured.

This theory will make sense to athletes who are still suffering long after their x-rays show that the injury has healed. This is an important discovery for athletes … if you’re a professional athlete who earns your living by being able to perform physically … or a recreational athlete who depends on your sport for relaxation and fun … EFT can speed your recovery and healing from injuries that are keeping you sidelined.

With any kind of injury that is hampering your sports performance, your body is traumatized … so are your emotions … and the cells surrounding the injury. EFT is one of the only healing methods that addresses your injury at all levels … often quickly … and usually permanently. EFT works without the use of drugs or extensive – and expensive -- physical therapy.

Are you still in doubt that your injury has an emotional component? How do you feel about being injured? Are you angry because you are missing games? Guilty because you are letting down your team? Anxious because you are just not healing the way you used to … and worried about your aging body … afraid that you’ll never play again? Unless my guess is wrong, just thinking about these things makes you ache just a bit more.

Research shows that pain feels worse when fear and depression are present.

In fact several pain studies published in the medical journal Psychosomatic Illness have shown that unpleasant emotions, especially fear and depression aggravate pain. This fits in with the theory behind EFT which agrees that excessive pain, limited mobility and slow healing are a result of unresolved negative emotions.

EFT also offers a solution in the form of a pain-free, drug-free, needle-free acupuncture treatment. Anyone can learn basics of EFT and it can be self-applied (usually in minutes). Acupuncture is commonly used as a treatment for athletic injuries, but EFT takes it a step further and helps you neutralize the negative emotions associated with the injury or trauma. You just use your fingertips to tap on a series of acupuncture points while thinking about the injury. If it sounds easy … it is … but it’s not perfect … it works about 80% of the time.

While a complete description of EFT is beyond the scope of this article, you can learn all the basics from the free EFT Get Started Package on the EFT website. So if you are sitting on the bench because of your limited mobility … or you’re nursing a sprain, strain, or torn ligament … all of these are likely to heal more quickly if you are able to resolve any lingering negative emotions and balance your subtle energy system. You could easily be doing EFT to get yourself back in the game.

Here’s a synopsis of another story from the EFT website.

Fanatical soccer player eliminates excruciating leg cramping
with 15 minutes of EFT

You can read the entire article on the EFT website

Sam Smith is a 44 year old, self professed fanatical soccer player. Sam had been suffering from cramps in his legs, feet and lower back for several years. The pain was sometimes excruciating and once it had begun, it was impossible to shake it off. It often settled in at night disturbing his sleep. Sam had been suffering with the cramping 3 to 4 times a week for about 3 years and it was sidelining his soccer game.

As the cramping was advancing on him one night, he decided to try EFT. He had been trying EFT with work colleagues but hadn’t thought of applying it to his cramping problem. He did so and after 3 applications of EFT, the cramping subsided to a minimum and after 2 more applications, the cramping was completely gone. This took about 10 – 15 minutes in total.

Sam reported that in the 3 months after the initial EFT treatment he had experienced only one bout of cramping and he dissolved that in just 2 applications of EFT – about 5 minutes. Sam says “I was ecstatic!!”
