WHAT IS ASTHMA

Asthma is a long term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. Asthma is caused by combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is a condition in which spasm in the bronchi of the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing occurs. It occurs due to allergic reaction or other forms of hypersensitivity.

Common signs and symptoms of asthma are:

  1. Coughing:- Worse cough occurs at night or early in the morning, making it hard to sleep at night .
  2. Chest tightness:- In this condition patient feels like something is squeezing or sitting on chest.
  3. Wheezing:- Patient feels whistling or squeaky sound.
  4. Shortness of breath.

Ayurvedic View:

As per Ayurveda asthma is a Swas Roga . The Kapha Dosha combines with pranvayu leading to obstruction in the respiratory passage called Pranavaha Srotas causing a disease called Swas Roga or Asthma. Asthma can be acute or chronic. It is a long term inflammatory disease of the airways of the lungs. Asthma can attack all age groups but often starts in childhood. Asthma is often treated with steroids that cause bad effect on body and is not properly cured but with ayurvedic treatment it can be cured properly.

According to Ayurveda there are five types of asthma determined by their range in difficulty to treat and three types based on imbalance of dosha.

  1. Due to imbalance of air element – Dry type asthma occurs
  2. Due to imbalance of fire element – Infection type asthma occurs.
  3. Due to imbalance of water element- Congestion type asthma occurs

Asthma can be genetic or due to environmental factors.

SYMPTOMS:-

  1. Recurrent breathing problems
  2. Breathlessness
  3. Wheezing
  4. Chest tightness
  5. Coughing
  6. Allergy from dust
  7. Difficulty talking
  8. Feeling of anxiety and panic
  9. Pale, sweaty face

COMPLICATIONS:

  1. Collapsed Lungs
  2. Respiratory failure
  3. Infection of the lungs
  4. Psychological problems like stress, anxiety and depression

DIAGNOSIS:-

  1. Spirometery
  2. Chest X-Ray
  3. Evaluation for heartburn and GERD
  4. Evaluation of the sinuses

NATURAL TREATMENT FOR ASTHMA:

Here are some remedies that can be performed at home to get rid of asthma :

  1. Ginger juice, pomegranate juice and honey 1tsf 2-3 times a day.
  2. Heat mustard oil with little camphor gently massage it on chest.
  3. Garlic – Boil 2-3 cloves in one quarter cup of milk.
  4. Eucalyptus oil, cinnamon oil or clove oil to the chest and back also helps to improve breathing
  5. Ginger, black pepper, turmeric, cumin can be ground together and mixed with honey to create a paste. A teaspoon a day of this mixture should be taken by the patient daily.

Avoid in Asthma

  • Asthmatic patients should avoid these meals:-  Dried fruits especially peanuts, shrimp, pickles, packed food, bananas, oranges, lemons, sour fruit juices, potatos, arbi, legumes, drinking cold water, cold drinks, ( milk, wheat, eggs should be reduced).

Things to be Taken in Asthma

  • Asthmatic patients should choose these meals:-  Fruits and Vegetables, white meat, red meat, fish, spinach, carrots, sweet potatoes, mango, melon and apricorts, watermelon, grapefruit, guavas, foods rich in magnesium and potassium.

Some herbs that are beneficial in asthma are:

  • Ginger – It has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Garlic – It has anti-inflammatory properties, antibiotic and antiviral properties, immunity booster and fight infection.
  • Ginkgo Biloba- It has anti-histamine and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Oregano- It has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Slippery Elm- It has anti- inflammatory properties.
  • Licorice- It has anti- inflammatory properties.
  • Turmeric- It has anti- inflammatory and very strong anti -oxidant properties.
