Lungs are the source of respiration in human beings. They come under the respiratory system. Respiratory diseases are very common these days. They can arise due to a problem with our respiratory system, which includes our respiratory tract, lungs. The main reason for respiratory disease is due to narrowing of the airway pathway, resulting in difficulty in breathing.

WHAT IS ASTHMA?

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease in which narrowing of the airway occurs, leading to obstruction and difficulty in breathing. It can also be characterized under allergic conditions in which certain triggering factors play an important role. Triggering factors stands for the presence of certain conditions which increases the chance of developing that disease. Trigger factors for Asthma can be - any allergen present in the air, change in temperature like extreme cold, heavy exercise, and emotional stress.

ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

WHAT IS ASTHMA?

According to Ayurveda, Asthma is termed as Pranavaha Sroto Vikara and comes under Kapha dosha. There are three energies in the body - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When the imbalance occurs between these three energies, the disease occurs. Due to vitiated Kapha, obstruction in the airway occurs, which causes narrowing of the windpipe, and resulting in Asthma.

CAUSES OF ASTHMA

Asthma mainly occurs due to vitiated Kapha, when excessive Kapha deposits in the airways, it results in asthma. When we take food which containing an excessive amount of Vata and Kapha, asthma occurs. Due to which obstruction to airways occurs and the person feels difficulty in breathing. Excessive cold, air pollution can also trigger this condition. Asthma can also occur if the mother smokes at the time of pregnancy. According to Ayurveda, asthma can occur due to two reasons, they are -

1. Kapha Prakopa -

It includes - Aahar (diet), Vihar (activities), Abhishandi foods (Kapha producing foods), banana, curd, black grams, milk, and non-vegetarian food.

2. Vata Prakopa -

It includes - Aahar (diet), Vihar (activities), intake of cold water, exposure to dust, smoke, cold air, high salt rich-diet, and heavy diet. It mainly involves the accumulation of Vata.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA –

Asthma can present with various signs and symptoms, which can vary from person to person. They can be -

  1. Cough with or without sputum
  2. Difficulty in breathing
  3. Tightness in the chest
  4. Wheezing
  5. Recurrent breathing problems

DIAGNOSIS FOR ASTHMA –

There is no specific test to diagnose this condition accurately, however, the patient's signs and symptoms can help to diagnose. Few tests can be helpful -

  1. Allergy test
  2. Chest X-Ray
  3. Spirometry

TYPES OF ASTHMA ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA -

According to Ayurveda, Asthma comes under Shvaas roga, it can be -

  1. Maha Shwasaa - In this type of asthma, heavy breathing occurs.
  2. Urdhava Shwasaa - In this type of asthma, prolonged upward breathing occurs.
  3. China Shwasaa - In this type of asthma, interrupted breathing occurs.
  4. Tamak Shwas- In this type of asthma, darkness falls in front of the eyes.

Sour food, Deep, fried and heavy food, Curd, rice, Cold food, cold drinks, cheese, curd, butter mil, creams, banana, Oily and greasy foods, white flour and white sugar

Do regular exercise, Yoga, Pranayama or Asana. Do not do excessive exercise as it may trigger the problem.

2. Home Remedies

Certain home remedies can be followed to decrease its signs and symptoms. These home remedies can be -

  • Nilgiri oil massage on the chest can be helpful during the attack.
  • Warm milk boiled with garlic at night time is very useful.
  • Steam can be taken at home, as it will dilate the airway pathways.
  • Take water, add cumin seeds in it and boil it, steam this solution, it will dilate the breathing pathway.
  • Make a powdered mixture of dry ginger root, long pepper and black pepper in equal amount and store it in an airtight container. Take half teaspoon of this mixture with honey along with lukewarm water.
