Blogs are everywhere and people are reading them like crazy. Do you have a favorite blog? Would you like to tap into the traffic that goes to that blog? Here’s a great tip for benefitting from that blogger’s traffic and having your business be seen by everyone who reads it.

Now, I’m sure many of you have used the idea of commenting on someone’s blog to tap into their traffic. The blogger writes a post, you comment on their post, and you add your name and website link to your comment. If people like what they read, they may click on your link. I have definitely gotten some traffic by doing this.

Become the Expert

But have you ever offered to be a guest blogger for that blog? Guest bloggers get much more attention than the people who just enter comments. After all, anyone can leave a comment, but a guest blogger must be someone who is important. Guest bloggers are seen as an expert.

This is the difference between going to a networking meeting and meeting people versus SPEAKING at the meeting. The speaker is always thought of as the expert and always gets more attention than the participants. The speaker is remembered longer as well, so can generate a following much quicker than someone just attending the meetings.

The same is true with a blog. When you submit blog posts as a guest, people will learn more about who you are and will have a greater tendency to click over to your website to get even more information on you and your business. If they like what they are reading, you may gain a new potential customer.

The Secret

The trick is to find blogs that complement what you offer. The blog that you choose to guest write on is important. You need to think about the market that is reading the blog. You obviously don’t want to be in direct competition with the blogger you choose to guest blog. You may take potential customers from each other.

You do want to choose a blog that has the target market that you are searching for. Think about your own target market. Does this blog market to the same people? If their readership is broader than your market, does it contain a subset of readers that will be a fit for your market?

For example, my target market is mothers who want to start and grow a home based service business. I choose blogs that have a high readership in that market. I want the readers on my guest blog to be ones that would also enjoy reading my blog.

The other thing to think about when selecting a blog is that you want to make sure that the topic you will be writing about complements the usual posts that the readers will expect from that blog. If the post topics are too different, it might just confuse the readers instead of piquing their interest. You will also want to match the style of that blog while at the same time using your own voice to write.

It would not serve me or the blog very well to post about how to market a home based business to mothers who are reading a particular blog because they are looking for the best products to buy for their newborn baby. If they are expecting information on good baby products, chances are they would just skip over a post about how to market a business.
