Let's start with some definitions First let's define the difference between right work and wrong work. Wrong work is work which you don't enjoy. The work feels stifling and constraining. Hello and welcome back to this series of articles on change. In the last article entitled ‘Make Change, or Change will happen to you’ I discussed the difference between minor life transitions and major life transitions. In this article I will discuss the process of dealing with endings and Elected transitions, Non elected transitions and Non Events.

Meet Kyle Kyle is 42 years old, married with two small children 12 and 10. Kyle has worked the last 16 years in the financial services industry. Through hard work and long hours he is now a director at his firm making $125,000 a year. He leaves his house daily at 6:15 a.m. to get to his office 90 minutes later after bumper to bumper traffic. He returns home each night between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. after his 90 minute commute. This leaves him barely time to eat, say hello to his family, and get to bed by 10 since he gets up at 5 a.m.

Here’s a story that might keep you up at night. I was talking with a client who had graduated with his MBA just a year ago. He was upset that things had not changed for him in his current company. No raise. No promotion. No new opportunities. In fact, no one even recognized that he earned his MBA. “My job doesn’t require an MBA but I have one. Now I worry that my current employer will see me as overqualified, likely to get bored and leave, further damaging my career mobility,” he explained.

As the unemployment rate continues to climb (8.5% in March 2009, Bureau of Labor Statistics), many of us are seeking out new options for maintaining some sense of stability for the future.
