Not even the greatest inventors and discoverers of all time really “discovered” or “invented” anything, they just became aware of a concept, or a possibility that was there all along. The Earth did not become round, when we discovered it was not flat. The Sun was the Sun long before humans became aware of and started to contemplate the great big yellow object in the sky. We do not need to re-discover what “everyone knows”; things and concepts that are part of common knowledge.

Recently there has been much publicity about the dangers of texting, talking on the phone, posting, and taking selfies when you are driving. On April 24, 2014 a young woman in North Carolina posted on twitter how happy she was while listening to the Happy Song on the radio. A minute later there was an emergency call. She had gone into the wrong lane while she was posting and hit a waste management truck head on. The car swerved off the road and caught fire. By the time help arrived she was dead.
Life is hard at times. Everyone experiences emotional pain over the course of their entire life. Our pain comes from various crisis. A crisis may be “situational” and “maturational" or "developmental." Situational crsis refers to a sudden, accidental, frightening, and often catastrophic event that one can’t anticipate or control. Several years ago I was driving home to Minnesota through central Wisconsin after a visit to my parents, a four-hour drive. My mother had criticized me for a minor matter that morning, and I responded with wounded intensity, feeling the injustice of her criticism. Somehow, a lot of the unfinished business in our relationship bubbled to the surface, because my emotions were heated out of proportion to the actual insult. As I drove home, I replayed our hot exchange over and ove

Anger is a completely normal and healthful emotion. It helps us focus our awareness on situations that require our attention, and helps us rouse the energy needed to protect ourselves from harm. But when anger is frozen into cynical hostility or resentment, it robs us of our natural capacity to give and receive the love and social support that protect us from the emotional (chemical) surges that can contribute to heart disease. Hostility can use up a great deal of energy and make us miserable. Healthful anger is flexible, controlled, and specific.
One day about 35 years after my fifteenth birthday while sitting in a psychiatrists office I realized that I had been acting out my entire life. This accomplishment both amused and horrified me. About this time I had determined that to go on living, I needed to find out who I was. This was a rather tall order since I had been abandoned by myself and my family at a very young age, so I had to break the task down to more manageable waypoints. The first job was to learn how to f

The medical world could not function without nurses. It's no secret to any of us who has had a doctor's appointment or been in the hospital that a nurse can make all of the difference in our total experience and recovery process. Whether undergoing a routine procedure, scheduling a simple appointment, or being there beside us while the doctor has a serious conversation, a nurse's presence can determine how well we as the patient copes with the situation and emotionally processes the outcome.
The Wonder Drug nnIt is now becoming more accepted that a fitness program can act as a depression medication; that as a depression treatment it can boost mental fitness for life and at the same time it can reduce the risk of strokes? But why? nnThe simple answer is that it is now understood that physical fitness is about much more than just muscles, lungs and heart. Athletes of all types boast about the HIGH or BUZZ they get from their run or workout. In fact, non-exercisers
A theater veteran named Noel Coward coined the phrase “The Show Must Go On” back in the 50s; but I gave it new meaning in the 90s as it summed up my life better than any other cliché. I was the president of a very successful communications company providing executive coaching and training. I was also suffering from medication-resistant clinical depression that landed me in the hospital to undergo electroconvulsive (shock) therapy. Running a business is challenging enough to begin with. Running a business during bouts of severe depression can seem impossible!

I was recently interviewed for an upcoming production that will address bipolar disorder and pregnancy. As a result, I thought it would be an appropriate time to share my thoughts on bipolar disorder and pregnancy. The pressing question is can a woman with bipolar disorder have a successful pregnancy and postpartum period? I believe the answer to this question is yes but there seems to be debate over whether or not a woman with bipolar disorder should even become pregnant let alone have a successful pregnancy.

Have you wondered why some people are able to cure themselves from depression and others are not? Even those actively partaking in similar self-helping treatments do not always receive the same results. Some are cured and others remain depressed. After analyzing case histories of depressed versus formerly depressed persons, one attribute stands out most: the attribute of hope. Whether or not those suffering from an illness are hopeful makes all the difference for their progno
As you begin to decide on the logistics of your support group, one of the first things to consider is who you would prefer to actually attend. For example: - Will this be a group for men as well as women, adults, and possibly teenagers? - Will your group serve those have recently been diagnosed with a chronic illness, or those who have lived with illness for many years? - Will seniors who live at home independently find it to be of value, as well as those who are currently living in assisted living facilities? - Don't forget to include people who are single who live alone, as we

I recently learned from my routine annual blood test that my thyroid is hyperactive. My thyroid has been checked regularly over the years and the results have been fine so why am I having the problem now?
I distinctly remember the day that my life changed forever. After a few weeks of intense swelling in various parts of my body, my doctor called to give me the lab results at my place of work. She said the rheumatoid factor was positive and that this most likely was due to the fact that I did indeed have rheumatoid arthritis. I took a deep breath and asked, "On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being normal, what can I expect my life to be like from now on?" She tried to avoid the question, not wishing to discourage me.
Many people believe that all that you need to succeed in life is to work hard, do what people tell you, and be nice. Unfortunately that is not all you need. It helps, but many people seem to hear the word no often for jobs, promotions, and relationships. They are usually nice hard-working people, but they just don't get ahead and it is frustrating and heartbreaking.

Depression is a medical condition. It is not just on one's mind. It is not an imaginary illness. It is a real disorder that requires to be diagnosed. Eventually, depression is like any other illness that demands for treatment. Medical practitioners and mental health experts usually conduct several depression tests to diagnose whether
Your environment and your behavior affect how you feel physically and emotionally. For example, if you are in a stressful environment at work and at home, you feel anger and anxiety which can make you prone to heart attack and any disease epidemic that there is. Whether it's the flu, a stomach virus, or just the common cold, getting anxious and angry makes it worse. The best thing is to see if there is anything you can change at work or home, and change how you respond to it.
Anxiety is a common complaint among people of all ages. The sources of their anxieties varies with each person. Some are anxious about everything, while others are anxious about a specific, narrow life issue such as job and money. Anxiety is generally not negative as long as (1) it’s mild and; (2) the patient is conscious of their thoughts. Here I am talking about anxieties that do not arise from some kind of trauma.
Never underestimate the power of mood on your thinking and behaviour. Many of us know the experience of being in a good mood or getting carried away by a pleasant shopping environment and being lulled into buying something that we later regret. We’ve probably all had the experience of looking at ourselves in the mirror and not liking what we see or being unable to find that “right” thing to wear. We find ourselves being critical of how we look and being unable to find somethi

With all the recent talk about gun control and mental health, I decided to take a look at how far America’s mental health system has changed (or not changed) over the past few years. First, I must state that when I wrote a blog about Mental Illness and the Law, the research shows that those with mental illness are no more violent than the general population when substance abuse is not involved. In fact, according to an overview published in the June 2003 issue of World Psychiatry, one of the findings was:

This article will give you tips on how to seek therapy and handle your feelings in a productive way.
