There are several ways to deal with the “normal” hurt and pain that we experience living our lives in the world. This pain, of course, varies from one living situation to the next. In some countries life is just about unbearable. There isn’t enough food or water. There are corrupt government systems where people are being systematically murdered and tortured. When we look at those places we can at least take comfort in the fact that it isn’t happening in our lives, if that is the case, but that is often not good enough. Suffering is very subjective.

I was going through my roommate’s socks in the dark looking for his stash when the lights came on. He grabbed my arm, and spun me around shouting, “What the hell are you doing?” He didn’t tell anyone else, but when he calmed down he made me promise I would get myself straightened out. I promised I would, but I didn’t mean it. I was hooked and would do anything to get more dope. I’m pathetic and despicable. I hated myself.

It doesn't matter how many times I visit a place; I will always see new things and have a completely different experience. On my first visit to the Stupa, I spent time in a seated meditation, while facing the Stupa itself. This morning, I was guided to pay attention to Mother Earth. So, that is exactly what I proceeded to do.

Every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God is powerful and four of those powerful words come straight from the prayer that He taught us to pray in the book of Mathew in the Bible. They are "Thy Will Be Done!" It is the Lord's will that we need in our lives! We cannot trust our own understanding of situations becuase we can not see the end from the beginning like God can. He already knows how we need to proceed, and the outcome. He knows what is really going on behind the scenes and He only wants the best for us.

Each morning I step out on my back deck and say this short prayer, “Mighty God in me, I face thy ete al sunrise and receive its mighty radiance and activity visibly manifesting in my life and affairs. And so it is. Amen.” I’ve noticed that the prayer somehow seems more potent on sunny days than on overcast or rainy days, such as this morning. Like a small child who doesn’t understand that an object can exist even if she can’t see it, my brain seems to react to the fact that the sun is not visible by thinking that it doesn’t exist.

We humans invest huge amounts of energy, time and resources trying to create a sense of certainty and security. Uncertainty can terrify us because it threatens the control we believe we have over life, and so we cling to those things that are supposed to bring us certainty, and refuse to acknowledge that they will all pass one day.
