One big mistake that entrepreneurs often make is staying in startup mode for a very long time. When this happens to you, it would seem as if you were always standing on the break. Thus, you must make a move to transition from being a startup business into an established one. Ideally, you want to be in the startup phase only for the first two years of business operations.
"If our emotional stability is based on what other people do or do not do, then we have no stability. If our emotional stability is based on love that is changeless and unalterable, then we attain the stability of God." ~ Marianne Williamson Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions. Emotions are contagious. When you around someone and they are stressed, our natural reaction may be to feel upset too. Sometimes when you walk into a room, you can feel that the other person is stressed.
In looking to professionally certify in a field I had been actively engaged in for years, I did a thorough search of coaching certification bodies and key individuals who were core members of the body. I was lead to the Certified Coaching Alliance, and had the good fortune of studying and ...
NOVEMBER 11 May I Never Forget/Gratituder Thankfully, November 11 is an annual day that is celebrated. I wonder if I would so clearly remember to be grateful without the reminder. I am truly grateful that I did not have to live through or fight in any global wars over my lifetime, and I pray the same is true for my children, grandchildren and our lineage going forward. This did not happen by chance. I look back and remember with gratitude stories told to me by my grandfather and both my father and mother. They served their home lands with honour in WW! and WW2 respectfully.
Today I am celebrating the first anniversary of an epic adventure and journey in my life. I was slowly emerging from a very painful and soul-destroying experience that left me feeling battered and beaten. I did not know my up from my down, felt unrecognisable to myself and at times felt like I had reached the end of the line. There was a fantastic support network around me but my inner numbness and broken spirit did not always allow me to see the extended hands of love reaching in my direction.
Self-limiting beliefs are a cage that we build around ourselves. It becomes our view of what’s possible or impossible for us. It’s an invisible cage that securely locks us into one perspective, and locks us out from another.
A moderate amount of stress can be a good thing. It can motivate us to stop procrastinating and to get things done. It can energize a project and, let's be honest, make life more exciting. Excess stress, however, can be damaging indeed. It can paralyze us, derail our progress and wreck havoc with our health and minds. When we''re over-stressed, we can make life miserable for ourselves and everyone around us.
The one questio I get asked over and over from women entrepreneurs is, <cite>"How do you know what to delegate to an assistant?"</cite> I love this question because it tells me you realize that you can't (and shouldn't) try to do it all in your business and your ready to get the support you need.
It is not uncommon for those of us in the healing profession to simultaneously be experiencing the exact same things our clients are experiencing. That’s one of the greatest gifts, I find, in being a healer, we heal in others that which needs to be healed in our self. Recently I have noticed a common thread in my conversations with almost every client, the illusion of control has been running the show and nothing is getting done other than frustration, self-sabotage and negative self-talk.
If on a given day your aim was to accomplish the following: A glass of water in the morning 20 min walk in the eveningr Paying the phone billr Doing groceriesr Having a nice cup of coffee And you accomplish all of it – You are successful! By definition you are successful. You aimed to complete certain tasks and you completed them all – it is success! Success by definition is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.
I wrote this note yesterday not realizing it was Ghandi’s birthday. It was in response to the death of 18 year old Tyler Clementi who killed himself after being “outted” on the internet. We have an opportunity to transmute this tragedy into one of leadership. Perhaps Tyler’s spirit agreed to perform this tragic role to elicit such a collective shift toward true leadership. ~ Here’s the note… When we see atrocities, our ability to teach a different way is being called forth that embraces and includes all with love and respect.
Think about the last time you were involved in a discussion or argument where you reacted. How did you show up in that exchange? Prickly? Angry? Defensive? Powerless? Personally, when I am being reactive I become susceptible to all sorts of negativity.
Have you been hearing all of the buzz about social networking? Feeling confused? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The great news is that it isn’t as complicated or time consuming as it may seem. Plus, it’s more than just social; it’s good for your business to get involved. The list of social ...

Practice, Practice, Practice I’m a golf nut, and some may say certifiable. With the amount of golf tips and lessons I’ve had appear on my computer screen this last little while; it caused me to reflect on not only my golf game, but my life. I am a believe in asking for help, and when it comes to my golf game, I read a lot a do watch instructional videos and tips. I watch top level professional players and listen to them. I have gone to what might be called golf “rehab”, intensive clinics lead by great teachers where 100% of the focus is on the golf swing with the intent to improve.r
"The Buried Life," by Matthew A old This poem articulates the profound truths of our heart and soul, that often, sadly, bear so little relation to the superficial happenings and conversations of our days. It invites us to be true to who we really are, to share our genuine self with those we ...
Do you feel stuck in a rut? Do you have the same things going on day in and day out? Are you ready for a change?
There is no single more powerful stumbling block to moving beyond our divorce into a new life than the inability to accept our new reality. Acceptance is the hardest part of the divorce recovery process. Acceptance requires total honesty, courage and the willingness to let go of the life that we had...a life that no longer exists. Without that acceptance, we cannot move forward and create a new life. How does one learn acceptance? Although it takes time and a good deal of inner work, it can be done.
Did you hear about “Carmageddon?” Several weeks ago, the 405 freeway (noted to be one of the busiest freeways in the nation) that runs through Los Angeles closed for a weekend period of 53 hours for repairs. This created a frenzy here in Los Angeles called “Carmageddon” which forced residents to think creatively about their weekend travel plans. Many people (including yours truly) decided to stay home and avoid any hassles. I made a firm decision that if I couldn’t get to my destination on foot or by bicycle, I’d just stay home.
Many people struggle with finding time to fit everything into their busy schedules. We often neglect our health and well-being in favor of completing tasks. We don’t exercise. We don’t eat right. We don’t even relax. We think that we just don’t have the time to take pause in the midst of ...
Accountability: Whether you love that word or hate it, it is invariably one of the active ingredients for personal and professional success. The importance of accountability is proven in corporate situations where the C.E.O.s are held accountable by a Board of Directors. They have to report to that board on a quarterly or annual basis, and if benchmarks previously set are not achieved – those C.E.O.s must answer for themselves and their actions. The same holds true for business owners running a small company full of employees, or solopreneurs running a one-person business.
There are so many opportunities around us to become a better person, but none of these opportunities can guarantee immediate success. It is never right to think that doing one thing could make you an instant success. The reality is, there are things that you did and didn’t do that out you in the position you are in right now. Should you regret? Maybe yes and maybe no. You can never be sure about the future, of course, so there is really no point in blaming your decisions in the past. Is There a Secret Formula for Success?
Have you ever really poured yourself into a task which seemed to you to be absolutely right and godly â only to have it âblow up in your faceâ? Do you find yourself wondering where God is, or why He hasnât blessed your efforts to serve Him? The following true story may help you to understand your own dilemma: The impoverished little nation of Haiti is able to offer only scant employment opportunities for healthy and ambitious citizens. Haitians who are elderly, ill, o
Having a start-up business is definitely not what any entrepreneur would dream of, especially considering that these small businesses are the ones most easily affected by even the simplest form of economic stability. Despite the fact that enterprises, regardless of their size, are truly the backbone of any economy, they become so helpless during a disaster in the economy. Nevertheless, this should not discourage you from putting up a business of your own, simply because there are way too many benefits of being an entrepreneur than its disadvantages.
Women are the fastest growing sector of business in the US today and women entrepreneurs are also wealth creators if they don’t sabotage their own success! And yet, so many women entrepreneurs miss the boat because of their mindset and lack of knowledge about money.
So, where are you relative to the goals you set for yourself back in January? Are you proud of your accomplishments? Were you able to stay motivated and on track? If so, congratulations on all of your hard work! If, however, you are like so many people whose goals slowly get pushed aside, it's ...
Life offers few guarantees. Some days I wish I had a sure-fire plan to make my life turn out exactly as I want. I bet you have those days, too. Wouldn’t a guarantee on everything be great? Perfect boss. Dream house. Well-behaved children. Steady income. Luxurious vacations. It would be so easy if they were just guaranteed, wouldn’t it? Think about it for a moment. If you were six years old and learning addition and you were guaranteed a perfect score on your test, would you keep studying? Some of you may, but not everyone would.
Yesterday I was working in my office when a truck pulled up behind my home. It parked in front of my garage and directly in front of the “no parking” sign, blocking my exit. This happens frequently at my place, when workers and delivery people in the neighborhood use my drive as a parking and ...
So much has been in the news recently about boards of directors, seemingly to be asleep at the wheel while major corporations crumbled. Most boards are designed to provide oversight and guidance to the direction of a business. Good or bad, boards of directors effect the direction of a ...
Recently, I had the opportunity to spend the day strategizing with a group of smart women entrepreneurs from different parts of the world. It was an energizing day focused on topics such as effective marketing, clear messaging to attract your ideal client, time management and money. At one point, women were expressing the challenges they face in getting everything accomplished each day including running a business, managing a family, and hopefully time to squeeze in a little self-care.
Women are the most creative beings on earth. You have inspiring ideas and daring dreams, however it can sometimes be a challenge to get the dreams out of your head and onto paper so you can design a plan to make it happen. Most likely, your “to-do” list is overflowing and your Big Idea hasn’t found a way to make it to the top of the list.
As a business owner you know a lot of people, and you continue to meet new people. This is your network. But what are you doing with it? How often do you connect with people in your network? Do you have a plan to stay in touch consistently and develop your relationships? If you’ve ...
Do you have a hard time communicating with your boss or supervisor? Having a difficult boss is a reality for many professionals and can be extremely stressful for those in a job they hate. Dealing with others who have a lack of concern, offer poor instruction, are hostile or manipulative can weigh you down. If you dread meeting with, calling, or emailing your boss think about how this affects your energy and work output. It can feel draining and limit your growth within a company.
Today I started a 21 Day meditation challenge for the 12th time. Not sure if the meditation is the challenge, or if the real challenge is me and my total inability to be still and think of nothing, for 20 minutes. The first day I attempted meditation, I fell asleep. I then let a few days slip by and tried again but made sure to have a cup of coffee before sitting down. There I sat cross legged with my steaming hot cup of coffee perched between my legs – doesn’t that sound relaxing?
Committing to make any change in your life can often be a very trying experience. When you truly don’t believe in the change you are making or why you are going about the process, your chances for that change to take root in your life becomes significantly less. Each of us whether we are aware of it or not, live by a set of values. Our values are a part of who we are. They’ve either been instilled in us when we were young, have developed via our life experiences or are influe
The current economic climate has caused much alarm. Many of us are being faced with job losses, foreclosures, shrinking retirement accounts, credit crunches and an overall increase in costs for food, fuel, healthcare and housing. While it is easy to get discouraged and feel a sense of despair, it is important to remember that you are never powerless. You always have the power of choice. You can choose how to think and respond to the circumstances and events going on around you.
It still doesn't seem real. I can't believe it. It's taken me this long to get into a routine of things. Don't get me wrong, I had what I thought were routines. Then a week or two passed, and I would tweak them trying to see if something worked better. Sometimes routines put you in a rut, but as a single mom to a newborn, I need a routine.
Having a business partner can have a direct impact on how a business operates. For entrepreneurs, the decision of whether to have a business partner or not is also a huge one. On the positive side, having a good partner in running your business can add value to your enterprise. But then again, this comes with risks as well, like ending up with an incompetent partner. Nevertheless, finding a business partner is generally part of growing and expanding a business, which makes it a risk worth taking.
You can have everything you ever wanted if you choose to want everything you have. Think about it. It sounds like a paradox, but it is perfectly true. What do we really want in life? It’s really quite simple… we want relationships, health, money, and a career. We actually have all that. It just depends on what we choose to focus on.
Recent surveys show that 70% of people hate their jobs and most are actively looking for another one! Putting aside all of the specific reasons and circumstances, that’s a whole lot of unhappy people. It’s natural for professionals to feel that way because many people are wrapped up in their job, since it provides income to support their family and a sense of identity. If you’re working full-time, odds are you spend at least a quarter of all of your time at work! Life is too short to be unfulfilled, especially in your career.
Having a job or career that requires you to do something you are passionate about will certainly encourage you to work harder. However, this alone doesn’t offer any guarantee that you will be successful, especially if your plan is to turn your passion into a business. At the end of the day, it is imperative that your courage meet with good business opportunities. When this happens, you may witness how passion integrates with business sense. While it won’t be that simple to succeed in a business founded on your heart’s desires, it is definitely not impossible to achieve.
Recently, someone told me about an opportunity she almost missed because it had never occurred to her that the thing she wanted to do was possible. Her story was a good reminder that sometimes, if we are not looking carefully for the opportunity, we miss it entirely. When we are busy and trying to get a lot done, it’s easy to fall into a mindset that limits our outcome and our opportunities before we even begin. Far too many times we set our expectations by thinking about what we’d be “okay with” instead of by thinking about what we really truly want.
By now, everyone who hasn’t been hiding out under a rock has heard about the subprime mortgage fiasco. Banks lent money to people who didn’t qualified for it by using twisty, unethical strategies like “liar loans” (literally falsified loan applications, which is otherwise known as loan fraud), ...

You've probably heard about a recent campaign in San Francisco, Califo ia to put a measure on the ballot banning circumcision. I think this campaign illustrates some of the troubling assumptions people are increasingly making about spirituality in our culture, and I'm going to look at some of those assumptions in this post.
As more and more attention is being paid to introversion, thanks to Susan Cain and her book, “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking,” the world is slowly becoming aware of introvert value and, what’s better, willing to make some adjustments to accommodate introverts and recognize our ability to make valuable contributions. For example, Steelcase, an international company providing “office furnishing solutions,” has designed a special “Susan Cain room”: a soundproofed room to which an employee can retreat for respite from the stimulus overload of a busy office.
When you wake up in the morning and get ready for work, how do you feel? Are you excited about the new day ahead? Do you feel fulfilled, knowing that you’re passionate about your career and making the income you want? Unfortunately, a lot of people I’ve spoken with recently are feeling stuck. They are stressed out, worried, and feel like they are caught in a cycle of monotony. This doesn’t have to be your reality!
Your divorce is not a failure or a mistake. People miss an incredible opportunity to learn, grow and change for the better when they view their divorce through the lens of failure. A so-called failure is actually a lesson in how not to do something and an invaluable tool for doing things right and in your self-interest in the future. I am presently immersed in my second reading of a marvelous book entitled, ‘The Tender Bar’ by J.R. Moehringer.
