Leaders today more than ever need Personal Growth to address the challenges of globalization and fast-paced lifestyles. This is my conclusion after 20 years in the field, both as Executive and Executive Coach. It’s a powerful recognition, decades after Dale Carnegie and the rest, that we need interpersonal skills, positive attitudes, and stress management more than ever to succeed in the 21st Century.

What are the essentials of Personal Growth for Leadership Development?

Well, the three I’ve already mentioned, interpersonal skills, positive attitudes, and stress management, are a good start. And as you begin to deepen your ability to listen so your relationships improve, recognize that there are solutions to most problems that help all concerned, and choose from the plethora of options to relax and rejuvenate on a regular basis, you will surely discover more and more finer points of this journey into Empowerment & Transformation, the new code words for Personal Growth.

Personal Growth started as a way of opening people’s perspective to see more options and possibilities for success and joy in their personal and professional lives. The truth seems to be that we all need a variety of resources for our internal evolution to bring fruitful results in our external reality. For example, if we are impatient all the time, we need to develop patience with ourselves before we can extend it to others.

Leaders of today require both street smarts as well as their academic training. Positions of authority bring us into contact with a more diverse range of people, places, and things, than simply working for a paycheck. Real leadership requires a vision for success that includes everyone involved for the pending challenges of this new millennium. There’s a new paradigm of power that is being built on collective benefits and consensus, more than at any time in history.

A sales manager, VP of a given department, an entrepreneur, or other leader will quickly find the benefits of developing skills of being a better human being. In all areas of your life, being a better human being will attract success to you in the form of better friends, associates, clients, and the capacity to effectively negotiate your needs and wants in any situation.

So where do you begin? Not all or even most Executive Coaches will address these finer points. It’s like the big, open secret that is so often overlooked in the mad rush to larger profit margins. There is indeed an elegance that arises from cultivating a personal experience and identity that values universal virtues. Values clarification is a topic that was very popular in the 70s, and yet, we need to revisit many topics to effectively integrate new skills and qualities of being into our daily life.
