If you hate conflict, you could spend a long time stewing in your anger before you express it to the person who caused it. By then, your anger may have built to levels beyond reason. Or maybe you zipped off an e-mail, comforted by the fact that technology helped you avoid a face-to-face confrontation. But sometimes your relationships need that personal conversation to clear things up and move on to more enjoyable interaction. The trick is to do it without becoming so angry that you lash out and hurt the person you love.
We’ve all heard our friends talk about chemistry and connections. Rock stars sing about the “chemicals between us” and movies depict racing hearts, sweaty palms, and love at first sight. Have you wondered where all of these scientific, chemical, and physiological terms and ideas manifest in relation to love and attraction? It might surprise you to know just how much of your relationship is invested in hormones. Why do we even have “Chemistry” with other people?
Are you lonely? Do you believe you just need to learn to live with this? At our recent retreat in Assisi, Italy, besides visiting powerful spiritual places, our group entered into an atmosphere of deep healing. Sometimes Joyce and I have the opportunity not only to lead the retreat, but also to participate in some of the exercises for our own continual healing, which is an ongoing lifetime adventure. One morning, all of us in the group revisited our childhoods to more closely examine those things that still have power over us. We did this in small groups of four persons and, when it was my turn, I revisited some physical violence from my parents.
As a psychologist and relationship counselor for over 25 years, I speak from experience when I say that love is an ocean of infinite depths: people are complex, riddled with flaws and hidden desires, seeking to be accepted and understood. Different partners draw different emotions out of us—some we didn't even know we had—and keeping up a happy relationship can become tedious. Yet human beings also possess an unyielding need to love and be loved. Some people need help releasing this love they hoard within.
If you are one of the many women underpaid for your work, it is your individual responsibility to make sure you do what you can to correct this situation. Sure, there are many exte al variables that prevent women from getting paid what they are worth, but each individual woman must handle her own situation and insist she earn the salary she deserves. (Leave it to the Sheryl Sandberg’s of the world to spearhead policy and legislative change to close the gender wage gap; but until these changes occur, you must take action into your hands.)

Each time we survive the loss of a love, any kind of love, life takes on new meaning. We hurt, we cry, we learn, we grow. We promise ourselves that the next time around, we will be smarter and wiser and we are. . . . . until the next time.
As friends of yours share their thoughts, feelings, fears and needs with you, keep in mind that it is impossible to truly understand what motivates people to behave, feel and think the way they do. The same might hold true to you: you yourself think, feel and behave with your partners and in your relationships according to your own interpretations of whatever situation you find yourself in. As you understand your reasoning for whatever situation you find yourself in, the more empowered you become to develop a successful intimate relationship.

Being in a relationship can make a strong life, knowing that you have someone special, who will care for you. I know people in my life who when asked how are things going, will reply, “I’m living the dream.” Can you say the same? If you could, what would it mean? As far back as Sigmund Freud, psychologists have been saying that there are two major areas in a person’s life---love and work. When you are ...
Many singles find dating too difficult at times. Indeed, singles are “connected” with many others via social networks, but still find it difficult to find a suitable partner, develop and maintain a satisfying intimate relationship. Convincing themselves that they are just too busy to look, search and find a partner – rather than attempting to understand what it is that hinders their attempts! – many of them resort to hiring personal coaches, advisors or dating experts, hoping that these professionals will match them with the “right” person.
SENSUALITY! Do you have an idea of what sensuality entails, or what it means? Everyone has that smirk on their face, contemplating their last sexually fulfilled experience. Though sensual needs to be clearly defined and examined and I will break it down into two parts: 1) emotional and 2) physical
Remember getting through a breakup listening to music that defined your situation the best? And running a car on the highway listening to music that created an environment? I definitely do. All of us do. But why is it said how does music affect teenagers’ emotions and behavior when we choose to listen to it accordingly?
I was born in early Spring, between March 20th and 19th April, when the Sun was in Aries, the Sign of the Ram. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, beginning at the Spring Equinox. From this point onwards (in the northern hemisphere) the days are longer than the nights. Spring has sprung! Aries is the cardinal fire sign. Cardinal signs show an equal balance of power and adaptability, whereas Fixed signs like Taurus are more powerful than adaptable, and Mutable signs like Pi
There is so much talk these days in our personal and professional lives about the importance of people ‘connecting’. Business networking is about connecting, good personal relationships need connection between two people, therapists ask couples, ‘do you feel connected?’ And the current mother of all connecting species: “friending” on Facebook! So what’s all this connecting business about?

How are you limiting yourself to limit your partner? What are the consequences of this? "As long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you otherwise might." ~Marian Anderson 1902-1993, Concert and Opera Singer "I've always wanted to take flying lessons," Ginnie told me in our phone session.
Are you looking for Christian relationship help because you struggle with speaking the truth in your relationships? Then, this biblical truth and tip will help you. It is especially problematic to communicate your perceptions, feelings, choices, needs, and beliefs to difficult people. One of the misconceptions we have is thinking that we have to get the other person to agree with our truth. This keeps us in a place where we are stuck and unable to move on when the person doesn't agree with us. We react by arguing, nagging, threatening, lecturing, and re-explaining.

I have a confession: I was confronted by a friend recently. She suggested that I might possibly be living more from my head than my heart. She wanted to know where all the successful relationships were and was asking me, since I am THE REALationship Coach (That's pretty much the way she said it, too!) to show her evidence that these happy and successful relationships really existed. She was angry. She was hurt.
When we enter relationships, we do so with the knowledge that we will be providing the person with emotional commodities and that they will be doing the same for us. Every relationship is filled with needs. Each individual will have different needs, and each relationship will provide different solutions for meeting them.
Dear Dr. Romance: Is it possible to love someone without ever dating them? If so, how can you tell that you are in love? Dear Reader:
Energy is physical and emotional and both your physical and emotional energy affect each other. Have you ever been through a difficult emotional time – a break-up or divorce, or a difficult financial situation? It drains your physical energy doesn’t it? And when you are physically exhausted it affects your mood and impacts how things can grate on you that normally might not. My children have often said to me how much older I looked when I was coming out of a very difficult relationship. It drained me physically and emotionally and it showed in my looks and my attitude to life.

It happens to the best of us. No matter how passionate and exciting the first few months may have been, everyone falls into a rut. If you notice that your relationship has lately been lacking that spark and your partner is losing interest, then youâre in the right place. The beginnings are always fairy-tale like; youâre getting to know each other and that thrill on its own causes an attraction. But what about afterwards? What is a REALationship? A REALationship is one in which you have openness, honesty, integrity, individuality, growth, passion, and intimacy. This begins with the relationship you have with yourself. Start by answering the following: • Do you know and live your life purpose? • Do you know and live by your core values? • Do you know the “deal-makers” and “deal-breakers” in your life? It is easy to march to the beat of other’s drums or perhaps to go along with the trends of the masses.
Do you ever avoid talking about the impact of wars around the world or the economic situation for fear it may turn into a debate, or even a full blown argument? If so, it's time for you to take back the power to have meaningful, enjoyable conversations with your friends. If you're like most people, listening to the news these days can be quite stressful. It's hard not to worry about the impact of wars around the world, and the constant anxiety about the economic situation is bound to fill your mind with images of doom and gloom.
In talking to clients I often hear them share that they don’t like dating because they feel awkward. One client mentioned that it feels like being back in High School. Thinking back of High School I remember worrying about what my date is thinking about how I look, what I say, or what I do – and that was exhausting. Today 15 years later I’m glad I’m not in High School anymore and I’m in relationship with a wonderful man. One of the things I love most about the relationship is who I am. I’m being authentic. It wasn’t always like that.
A friend’s husband told her early in their relationship that there was no need to fight. He said, “Everyone tells you to learn to fight fair. But I say, we don’t fight at all.” Always a coward in the face of conflict, she thought that was great. And they don’t fight, meaning they don’t throw things, dredge up old hurts from the past, or raise their voices to ear-splitting decibels. But they do fight, meaning they disagree. It would be tough to exist as an individual entity without feeling differently from your spouse every once and awhile.
Take a minute to think about what you expect from a loving relationship with a partner. Does your list contain any of the following common expectations? o Healing past wounds o Meeting all of your current emotional needs o Fulfilling fantasies and idealizations of how life should berno Making up for other less rewarding aspects of life / making your life "whole"
One of the most common traps I see couples fall into when they are upset with each other is the… “A, but B, but A, but B”… conversations. These conversations are characterized by their repetitive nature in which each person continues to make the same point over and over again. What’s happening here is that both people have fallen into a mindset in which they feel the overwhelming need for the other to hear and truly understand them. Each gets fixated on getting through to the
Ever had one of those days? You know . . . a day where everything seems to go wrong? You break the coffee pot, step on a piece of glass while cleaning it up; are late for work because of the huge line at the gas station; hit every red light, and miss the green one because the driver in front of you was too busy texting. We've all had one of those days. And when we do, our attention seems to stay fixated on whatever bad is going on—a stubbed toe, a rude comment, a fearful thought, etc. Yes, these are all inconveniences, even painful at times. But there is good news!
