In Feng Shui, the distribution of energy within a house is based on either the facing or sitting direction of the house. There are two formulas of Feng Shui that relies on the facing or sitting to demarcate the energy pattern of a house. If you get this direction wrong, it can skew your allocation of positive and negative sectors in a house to the detriment of the occupants.

Every house has a facing or sitting.

The facing direction of a house or front façade is the orientation of the facing of the house measured in compass degree. The sitting direction is always magnetically opposite the facing direction. Based on a Feng Shui compass reading, a house that is facing 10 degree will have a sitting of 190 degree i.e. 10 + 180. You can also use a standard compass if you do not have a Feng Shui compass.

It is important to differentiate between the house facing and house sitting. This is because most Feng Shui formulas take either the facing or sitting direction to ascertain the energy or “qi” distribution in a house. One of the popular Feng Shui formulas is known as Eight Houses or some called it Eight Mansions. Under this formula, energy is distributed within the eight sectors of a house. To map out the energy distribution, the house sitting is taken into consideration. For example, if a house sits at 0 degree as measured by a compass, it is regarded as sitting on the north direction.

How do you take the sitting direction of a house? Refer to the following rule.

The sitting direction is always magnetically opposite the facing direction.

If you know the facing direction of a house, you can measure the sitting direction by taking the compass degree directly opposite to it.

Another popular Feng Shui formula is known as Flying Stars Feng Shui. Under this formula, energy is distributed within the nine sectors of a house. However, the energy distribution is done by taking the facing direction of a house.

Under both Feng Shui formulas, any wrong assessment of the house facing or house sitting will render the energy pattern incorrect. Any Feng Shui recommendation which rely on the incorrect energy pattern is therefore untenable.

As a guide, the facing and sitting of a house can be determined by observing the following rule:-

• The main entrance is usually the facing.
• The street address is usually found at the facing.
• The side with the most scenery is usually at the facing.
• The side with the most traffic is usually at the facing
• The side with the most windows is usually at the facing.
• The living room is usually at the facing side of the house.
• The back-lane or backyard is usually at the sitting.

One important point to note is that the orientation of the main door does not necessarily share the same facing direction of a house. Even though the main door is considered as the qi mouth of a house by virtue of it being the main entrance, it may not be oriented in the same facing direction as the house.
