Mt. Everest Base Camp is located at 5364m above sea level. It is the foot of the world’s highest mountain. There are thousands of travelers every year hiking to this place. The Base camp is on the Khumbu glacier and close to the Khumbu ice fall, which is the first step of the Everest expedition.

How to Visit Mount Everest Base Camp

There are two different options for visiting Everest Base Camp from Kathmandu. The most popular way, which is more than 90% of the Everest visitors from Nepal travel there with an adventure trek like the EBC trekking, Cho La pass adventure, and the Everest high passes trip. The base camp journey is a 12-day round trip from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, but some are doing a short one as a helicopter return trek, which is the helicopter flying out from Gorakshep on the other day of the EBC visit.

The trekking trip begins with a scenic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu or Ramechhap and then walks to the base camp through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Dingboche, and other Sherpa towns. The high passes route goes right ahead to Chhukung from Dingboche to cross Kongma La and Khumbu glacier before the base camp, but the base camp and Chola pass routes take left through Thukla and Lobuche from the lower.

You can also directly visit there from Kathmandu without many days of walks in the high altitudes. The Everest Base Camp Helicopter tour takes you within a couple of hours from Kathmandu to the base camp with several landings on vantage viewpoints. The Heli Tour is a group-sharing flight trip, so individual travelers also can book it. The Travel agency arranges for other people to join this flight to fly to the Everest base camp from Kathmandu.

When is the Best Time to Visit Mt.Everest Base Camp?

October and November in autumn and March and April in spring are the best time to visit Everest Base Camp from Kathmandu with a trek. December offers the best weather conditions, but the temperature starts freezing, so you can fly in December and the other months from autumn and spring.

There are still some trekkers walking on the Everest route to visit the Base Camp in winter, but if you are planning a trek in winter, you need to have extra warm trekking gear. But, summer from June to August is not recommended because usually rains a lot at this time and offers poor visibility.

Can You Speep at the Base Camp?

There is no lodge at the base camp, so you do not get accommodation to sleep overnight there. However, if you bring a tent with you then you can fix it to sleep there. Also, you have to take food with you.
