By now, you’ve heard it a dozen times that the way to accomplish your goals and realize your dreams is to get clear about what you want and then go for it. Easier said than done. That’s usually the cue for our inner Gremlins to creep inside our head and begin to trash talk us until all we want to do is curl up into the fetal position. Unfortunately, many people listen to their inner critic and believe what they hear. They stay stuck and play small. But it is possible to move past the roadblocks that stand in your way and overcome the obstacles once and for all.

Here are some common obstacles and how to avoid them.

Obstacle #1 – Focusing on the End

While it can be exciting to envision the “big picture” of your goal, this can feel really overwhelming for many people. When you focus too much on the end result, the amount of work involved to get there, can prevent you from even taking a first step. For example, if your goal is to compete in a marathon and you focus on what it’s going to take to win first place, you’ll likely give up before you lace up. Instead, take the first step and buy a proper pair of running shoes. Look into hiring a running coach or enlist a friend who will hold you accountable. Put yourself in some form of action to set the energy in motion. Once you get started, you’ll build the momentum to keep you moving forward.

Obstacle #2- Limiting your Beliefs

When you give in to your limiting thoughts and beliefs you give all of your power away. You’re basically saying no to your dreams and yes to living a mediocre, predictable life.

You’ll know you’ve let your limiting beliefs guide you when you catch yourself thinking things like:

I’d really love to start my own business, but I’m not smart enough to do it.
I’d like to go back to school but I’m too old.
I love the idea of traveling more, but I can’t get the time off work and can’t afford it.
I’d like to attract an intimate relationship, but I’ll never find someone I like.

Give your dreams a chance to come true by focusing on the facts instead of assumptions. For example, if you want to travel more, check with your boss and see how much vacation time you have. Research places that are within your budget. Get creative. There are many ways to have an inexpensive adventure. Start thinking about what’s possible and let the Universe work it’s magic.

Obstacle #3 – Fear

Fear can feel crippling and as if it’s going to be with you forever. But when you look fear in the eye and take a small step towards facing it, eventually it disappears. Find ways to replace your fear with excitement and enthusiasm. For example, if you have a fear of public speaking but you love music, incorporate music in your presentations. You’ll find that the inspiring songs will bring you to a place of joy and empowerment instantly replacing your fear.

Obstacle #4 – Feeling alone.

When you feel stressed out, overwhelmed or unclear of what to do next, reach out and ask for help. This is hard for many people because they think it’s a sign of weakness. But it actually shows tremendous strength and is the only way to grow. We need the input, expertise and objective point of view from others to help us gain new insights and perspective. We only know what we know. Reaching out to others, helps us expand our knowledge and become a better version of who we already are.

Action Challenge

This week choose one goal you’d really like to pursue. Write down the limiting beliefs and fears that come up for you. Find a way to make it exciting and take one small step towards making it happen. If you feel stuck, ask for help!
