The first step of any Nurture marketing program is to manage your database. You may build the best Nurture program ever, with the best content and graphics, but if you don’t have anyone to send it to, it is worthless.
When you start to build your database, ask yourself, what type of information do you want to have emails, addresses, and/or birthdays? Will your prospects and customers feel comfortable giving you this information?

By understanding what type of information you would like to have, you can create processes and systems to capture exactly what you need.

Many start-up businesses and existing small businesses, hesitate to start any type of Nurture program. They delay starting a Nurture program by using the excuse that they will start when they have at least 100 names or more.

Your nurture program should begin even if you only have five people to start with.

Why? First, you have to start somewhere. An arbitrary number is just that, arbitrary.

Second, the first few people on your list are as important as the first 100 or 1000. Build a relationship with them. They gave you their contact information; don’t violate that trust by ignoring them.

Third, with only a few people on your list, it is the perfect time to find where your Nurture program is strong or weak; what works, what does not work; what makes sense or what is just plain wrong. Better to make mistakes when only a few people see it rather than a few dozen.

Fourth, consider that every person on your list knows someone who can use your products or services. They may happily forward your message, tweet it or post it on Facebook to share it. The only way they can do that is if they actually receive something from you.

Start today. Look at your list of people and decide what you can send them. Maybe it is a thank you for buying a product or for providing their information to you. Whatever it is, say something and start down your path to building a relationship.
