Some of us often dream of new business ideas every day. As you brainstorm and visualize success, something goes wrong along the way. What was an exciting idea has somehow dwindled down to a mere fizzle. Could it be that you let someone steal your dream? If we can understand what happens, then we can keep the momentum going.

We know that dream killers are people who constantly shoot down your aspirations with negative criticisms. However, there exists an even more lethal dream killer we tend to overlook… ourselves. The truth of the matter is that the phrase “don’t let anyone steal your dream” could be a code for not facing the realities of what’s happening in your business.

Here are some indications to ascertain whether you are becoming your own dream killer and what you need to do to help the growth of your business:

1. You're Not Sure Of What To Do Next.

Problem: This is a common issue. There are so many things to do to build your business, you feel overwhelmed and don’t know what to do next. So, out of frustration, you end up doing nothing.

Solution: Because you’re unsure about something in your business, not knowing what to do next shouldn’t deter you. Do some research on whatever it is you are unsure of, simply ask for or find help in order to overcome this hurdle. Get the answers you need. Also, you can go back to your plan and see what the next steps are which may help to point you in the right direction. Always remember to take things one step at a time.

2. You’ve Lost Sight Of Your Idea.

Problem: You’ve become distracted and lost sight of why you're working so hard.

Solution: When it comes to staying motivated, remember why you were so excited about your idea in the first place. It’s important to revisit why you got started in the first place and imagine what life will be like once you’ve reached your goal.

3. You’re Having Second Thoughts About Your Great Idea.

Problem: Negative thoughts pop into your head from time to time. People are constantly telling you to be “realistic” and go get a “real job.”

Solution: Think positive thoughts. Dream killer abound, but don’t listen to them because their comments might be borne out of jealousy because you are doing something they don’t have the courage to do… misery loves company! You will experience the positives and negatives in your business. The key is not to let the negatives outweigh the positives. Your thoughts dictate the reality of your life, so by not letting the negative thoughts dominate, positive things will happen to you.

4. You're Not Seeing Any Results

Problem: We live in a society where we want things to happen F-A-S-T! Building a business takes time and to give up before anything even begins to happen is the sure road to failure before you even get going in your business. You see John Q. Public going around boasting about his success in 90-days, but you are still struggling six months later.

Solution: It’s possible that John’s skill level and his commitment to get those results may be different than yours. Work at your own pace. Develop a plan. Write the steps you think it will take to get to where you want to go. This way you will be able to track your progress. Being able to see “the light at the end of the tunnel,” will definitely give you the lift you need to keep going. Stay focused and keep reminding yourself what your goals are and why you were so excited about your idea in the first place.

Realizing your dream business is easy. Staying on course and overcoming obstacles is the gas in the tank that will fuel success in your business. One of the most crucial aspects of running a business is knowing where you’re going and how you will get there. A plan can be ambitious, but in the beginning, make sure it’s achievable based on your ability to get the job done… not someone else’s. If you are a start-up business, an achievable goal is to get through the first year and hopefully make a profit.

If you have a great new idea, don’t let anyone steal your dream… not even you! Seize your dream and run hard in the beginning, so that you can play in the end!
