Abstract

Acoustic Neuroma is a rare, non-cancerous condition which affects the hearing and balance nerves in the inner ear. In people affected by this condition, a slow-growing tumor develops on the main nerve which leads from the inner ear to the brain. The tumor can gradually press against the brain structures and can hinder some vital functions, thereby becoming a potentially life-threatening condition. Hence, Acoustic Neuroma requires timely treatment. Planet Ayurveda herbal manufacturing company offers some beneficial herbal products for managing Acoustic Neuroma in a safe and natural manner.

Acoustic Neuroma: Overview

Acoustic Neuroma is an uncommon, but benign, condition which is characterized by the growth of a tumor on the vestibular nerve (the eighth cranial nerve). The nerve links the inner ear to the brain, and is associated with balance. The tumor indicative of the occurrence of Acoustic Neuroma develops gradually over a period of time and puts pressure on the hearing and balance nerves in the inner ear.

The growth of the non-cancerous tumor on the vestibular nerve is a result of excessive production of the Schwann cells, which are responsible for supporting and insulating the nerves by wrapping around nerve fibers. The size of the tumor can slowly increase – from less than 2 cm to more than 4 cm – and can eventually press against the facial nerve as well as the brainstem, the cerebellum, and other brain structures located close to the vestibular nerve. A big-sized tumor can affect neurological function, and can even be fatal in some serious cases.

Acoustic Neuroma generally affects people aged between 30 years and 60 years. The tumor can occur in one ear (i.e. Unilateral Acoustic Neuroma) or can affect both the ears (i.e. Bilateral Acoustic Neuroma).

Acoustic Neuroma is known by some other medical terms also. These medical terms are Acoustic Neurinoma, Acoustic Neurilemoma, and Vestibular Schwannoma.

Causes of Acoustic Neuroma

The exact cause triggering the overproduction of Schwann cells, thereby leading to the occurrence of Acoustic Neuroma, is not clearly known. Nonetheless, some of the apparent causes of the condition are:

  • Genetic factors (linked to a problem called 'neurofibromatosis-2' or NF2).
  • Nerve damage resulting from environmental factors (like exposure to radiation to head/neck)
  • Long-term exposure to loud noise.

Symptoms of Acoustic Neuroma

Some of the Common Symptoms of Acoustic Neuroma are:

  • Unilateral (one-sided) hearing loss
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ear affected by the tumor)
  • Feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Pain in the ear
  • Unsteadiness or clumsiness
  • Loss of balance
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Mental confusion
  • Facial weakness
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Loss of sense of taste
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Numbness and tingling in the face (paralysis of facial nerve in severe cases).

Treatment of Acoustic Neuroma

The treatment for Acoustic Neuroma is largely dependent on the size of the tumor, along with the age and general health of the patient. The most common methods of treatment of the condition are radiation, surgery, radiosurgery.
