There are so many things that may hinder you from losing weight. Some may be external factors while others may be internal. For some people it may be as easy as changing a few habits. For others, there may be physical conditions that prevent them from leading an active life. What we're going to talk about are the obstacles that may often be overlooked or taken for granted. Some may even be obstacles we are not even aware of. These obstacles can be corrected or changed so that your fat loss efforts can produce maximum results.

Getting very little sleep can ruin your weight loss efforts. This one is huge. A lack of sleep causes hormonal imbalance. When there is an imbalance, there may be decreased energy and increased appetite. When you don't get enough sleep, you won't have the energy necessary to exercise. On top of that, an increase in appetite will sabotage your diet plan. Stress is one of the reasons people overeat. Food is one of the comforts of life and when you are under stress, you are bound to eat comfort foods. Needless to say, comfort foods are usually fat laden, high calorie foods. Also, cortisol, which is released when we are stressed, slows down metabolism. When we don't get the results we would like to achieve, we become impatient. Impatience is an obstacle to our goals because it may drive us to quit our fitness plans because we think that they are not working.

Skipping meals and inadequate water intake may be keeping you from losing weight successfully too. Not eating breakfast can make you overeat in later meals. It can also make your metabolism sluggish. Sometimes, we wrongly perceive thirst as hunger. Instead of reaching for a glass of water, we reach for a bag of chips and unwanted calories. Our choice of beverage may also be responsible for our failure to lose weight. Some beverages contain 400 calories or more and may cause serious damage to our weight loss efforts. Also, some medications such as steroids cause weight gain. The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor for possible modifications.

Sometimes the most devastating obstacle is our attitude toward weight loss. If our goals are unrealistic, we are bound to feel frustrated. This leads to loss of interest in our fitness plans and we tend to abandon our goals. It would be best to be conservative in our expectations. Every pound lost is a step closer to success. Another obstacle is overestimating calorie expenditure and underestimating what we consume. A 30 minute walk does not give you a calorie burn that is equal to a tub of ice cream.

Recognizing what hinders our weight loss goals may spell the difference between success and failure. Most of these obstacles can be overcome. It is only when you quit that you become a failure. Overcome your obstacles one at a time. Sooner or later, you're bound to succeed as long as you don't quit.
