This plant goes back 2,000 years in Chinese Medicine and was the first herbal treatment that was written about in Traditional Chinese Medicine texts. The seeds and the plant are full of antioxidants and creating great health. In fact, the World Health Organization said and I paraphrase… Perilla seeds are great for lowering cholesterol, slowing the aging process, inhibit the formation of tumors, improve vision, improve brain function, reduces the possibility of having a stroke, and it also helps those who are pregnant, and enhances the chances of having a healthy baby— Wow! Plus there are no side-effects to this wonderful herb/food.

Where it Grows - Perilla plants and the seeds grow in Asia, Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, and are cultivated in the US, Canada, Russia, and other places in the world.

Other Names - In Latin, the name is Perilla frutescens and it’s part of the mint family. And it’s also called Shiso seeds, in the US it’s called the Beef Steak Plant, Su Zi, ooba, deulkkae, tía tô, kkapnnip, Aojiso, Japanese basil, Chinese basil, and other common names.

Parts Used - The whole plant is edible, the seeds are super healthy. The leaves can be eaten raw in salads or cooked in soups and stews, the stems can be pickled, the fruits are dried and the seeds removed and they are edible, and this is a wonderful plant in general, to have around the house… especially when times are rough. And the sprouts are also edible and can be used in salads. Most of these plants have green leaves and stems… but some have red leaves and stems.

Taste - Ground Perilla Seeds have a fresh, nutty, and savory flavor that is wonderful.

Lowers Cholesterol - The seeds are great for lowering LDL or bad cholesterol and increasing HDL or bad cholesterol thus helping to prevent cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes, and even cancer. And it also helps to prevent atherosclerosis.

Antibacterial - Perilla Seeds are also a powerful antibacterial agent that helps to prevent infections.

Anti-Depressant Agent and Great for the Brain - Because of all the powerful antioxidant properties of Perilla Seeds the oils have a major effect on our dopamine centers in our brain thus helping to make us feel happier. And it also helps to optimize brain function and help with memory. The University of Maryland Medical also found that ALA found in Perilla Seeds can help with depression.

Prevents Cavities - Perilla Seeds and the plant contain lots of Luteolin which helps to reduce dental cavities. Japan’s Asahi University found that Perilla Seeds and leaves prevent the growth of detrimental bacteria in the mouth.

Dose - You can eat as much as you like… it’s food. But remember all things in moderation.
