This is something a lot of entrepreneurs do that really sabotages their success. They get so caught up with what everyone else is thinking. Their brains are going a mile a minute with all sorts of worry and comparisons. As a result, they procrastinate and don’t take action.

I remember when I first started my ezine and had people opt out of my newsletter the first few months. Boy, did a lot of fears and doubts pop up. I had to do a lot of mindset work to not take it personally.

Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?

-This won’t be good enough...
-It’s too different...
-What if I’m doing it wrong?
-What if people don’t like it?
-What if it makes people don’t like me anymore?

There are lots more of those types of thoughts but these are the most common.
Let’s talk about what those negative thoughts really mean.

1) This won’t be good enough. Also known as “what if it’s not perfect?” Most entrepreneurs have a bit of perfectionist going on (often it’s more than “a bit”). The problem is they look around and expect to be perfect the first go around. They don’t realize all of the steps that those more successful had to take to get where they are. They think it’s just “magic” that this happens. They’re ignorant of all of the hard work and time that was put in to get the end results. Everyone has to start somewhere.

2) It’s too different. This is such a “catch-22”. The truth is you want to be different. If you look, act and talk just like everyone else, then, in essence, you are everyone else. Potential clients will not see any additional value in you. More importantly, they won’t see any differences in you which would make you more desirable.

3) What if I’m doing it wrong? The good news is that you aren’t in school anymore and being graded. You are your own boss. You will probably make lots of mistakes in the beginning. Actually, you’ll continue to make mistakes no matter how long you’ve been in business. What does change as you continue in business is the amount of times you’re doing things right.

4) What if people don’t like it? First of all, (and I hate to break this to you) not everyone is going to like everything you do. No one has 100% raving fans. There will always be people who love what you do and people who don’t. That’s really ok. Don’t take it personally. What you want to do in your marketing efforts is attract more people who really love what you do as they will become your raving fans.

5) What if people don’t like me anymore? This is a huge (monster-size huge) core belief of needing everyone to like you. The truth is (and see #4) is that not everyone is going to like you. Again, this is ok. Remember not everyone likes the President of the US – but enough liked him to vote for him and support him. He needed a certain amount to be re-elected. All you need is a certain amount to keep you successful in business. Focus in on the ones who love you!

Who should care? The bottom line is the person who’s opinion matters the most, is yours!
