I spent the majority of my adult life on a career path that most people would envy. I have always been an over-achiever. Although school didn’t interest me when I was young, education would become a passion that would later drive me to success. And, eventually success would fuel my ego and my ego would lead me to some of the biggest mistakes of my life.
I began my professional career as an elementary school teacher and quickly aspired to become a principal. I attained my first administrative position at the tender age of 28. I ascended to become one of the most respected principals in the state.
At 40 years old, I became the head of a professional educator association. By virtue of that position I became one of the state’s top education leaders. I held that position for 9 years. It was during that time I experienced some of my greatest successes. During my tenure there I created unique education programs that led to huge success, added association member benefits, and a national reputation for innovation, achievement, and creativity. But, it wouldn’t last.
Because I was such a “can-do” kind of personality, I believed everyone around me would be a “can-do” person too. I began to trust in some people who I would have been better off to let go, or never have become involved with in the first place. I was too nice and had a very difficult time saying “no” to anyone.
At the time of my greatest success, I was also making money as a consultant. For a few of those consulting years, I left some of that income off my personal tax returns. While it was inadvertently done, when I discovered the mistakes, I did not correct them.
Professionally, the tide was changing. All the success I enjoyed was being chipped away. Cash flow became an issue. People I trusted let me down. I was suddenly terminated from my job. In an instant my 30 years of professional success came to a grinding halt.
Over the next few years, I would seek new employment to no avail. I would be investigated by the IRS and eventually lose my reputation and my freedom. I would learn about the dysfunction of our justice system, learn the process of bankruptcy and foreclosure, and I would see the trimming of my friends and professional colleagues.
I eventually entered guilty pleas of subscribing to false tax returns and was ordered to pay restitution of $40,800. Additionally, I served 9 months in a federal prison camp. I had it all, lost it all, and now have a new outlook on life and am more successful than I ever dreamed. Most people would give up, but not me. I have an inner strength and resolve that is stronger, more authentic, and embedded into my life fiber.
I do not seek praise for overcoming my issues, nor undue recognition. My purpose is to share, teach, and inspire you to develop your inner-self so that no matter what happens to you, or because of you, you will have what it takes to overcome and thrive again.
Life is about choices. Our choices lead to our results and consequences even if they are unintentional consequences. Our choices in the past cannot be changed; there is nothing you can do to change them. But our choices from this moment forward will make the difference. What we decide to do or not to do today will impact our lives a month, a year, five years from now.
As a personal development junky and Christian, I now find myself in a unique position to use lessons learned to help others. Nowhere But Up is my second published book, and I am thankful for the lessons in it. They are lessons learned by me. As painful as the learning process has been, I thank God every day for them. Now I am charged with sharing them. The book is just the beginning.
As I go around to groups and speak presenting my lessons in spoken word and music, I am humbled at the charge. It has been said that we teach that which we most need to learn. I am honored to use my God-given talents to share these lessons and commit to my own continuous learning as well. Never stop learning!
My promise to you is that I’ll never judge you, nor anyone else. I promise to learn more and teach more. I promise to love and forgive unconditionally, and live the rest of my life as an authentic Christian dedicated to my new purpose, vision and mission. I promise to assist anyone who needs help by teaching them to become a new person with a Nowhere But Up life attitude!

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray I will listen. If you look for me in earnest, you will find me when you seek me. I will be found by you, says the Lord.” I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and bring you home again to your own land.” Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NLT)
